I NEED A BREAK
A break can mean five different things.
Start by naming what you actually need. A breathing exercise cannot replace another human being when the real problem is lack of coverage.
I need 10 minutes
If everyone is safe, reduce demands, step away, drink/eat/use the bathroom, text someone, or choose the minimum version of the next hour.
Find the next step →I need a few hours
Use your Support Network Map. Ask one person for one specific block. Also search social/day programs, companion supports and respite.
Find the next step →I need regular coverage
Investigate Medicaid/HCBS, DD agency services, respite programs, personal supports, companion services, day programs and paid caregiver options in your state.
Find the next step →I need overnight/weekend help
Look specifically for respite, in-home support, short-term residential options and people who can safely practice backup care before a crisis.
Find the next step →I need help right now
If you cannot safely continue providing care, or someone is in immediate danger, use local crisis/emergency services rather than trying to push through alone.
