WORK & PURPOSE
A meaningful life is bigger than “can they get a job?”
Work can matter. So can volunteering, education, contribution, creativity, routine and belonging. Start with the person's goals—not a single definition of success.
Competitive employment
A regular paid job may be the right goal when the role, environment, schedule and support needs fit.
Explore →Supported employment
Job coaching and ongoing supports can help someone get and keep a real paid job.
Explore →Customized employment
Build or negotiate a job around strengths, conditions for success and an employer's unmet needs.
Explore →Volunteering
A meaningful role can build skills, identity, community and routine without requiring employment to be the immediate goal.
Explore →Education & training
College, certificate programs, adult education and skill-building can be part of a longer work path.
Explore →Microbusiness / creative work
For some people, a small business, freelance work, art, making or selling can be a meaningful role when structured realistically.
Explore →Day / community programs
Some people benefit from structured daytime supports focused on community participation, skills, recreation or purpose.

Fit matters more than labels.
- What does the person actually want more of?
- What environments bring out their strengths?
- How much support is needed before, during and after the activity?
- How many hours feel sustainable?
- Is transportation solved?
- Could earnings affect SSI/SSDI, Medicaid or other benefits?
- Would a benefits counselor help before changing work hours or income?
- Does the role create real connection, choice and dignity?
Work + disability benefits
Social Security's Ticket to Work program is free and voluntary for eligible SSI/SSDI beneficiaries ages 18–64 who want employment support. State VR agencies and approved Employment Networks can also be part of the employment team.
Work incentives and benefit effects are individual. Use qualified benefits counseling before relying on a general earnings rule.
