A GOOD FIT MATTERS MORE THAN A LONG LIST
Compare the approach—not just the name.
These prompts are for a conversation with the person, school or qualified professional. Saving one creates a question to review in your own plan; it does not send a message.
ABA: individual goals and a real choice
CDC describes applied behavior analysis as a behavioral approach to developing skills, alongside developmental, educational and other supports. Programs differ. The decision should focus on this person's meaningful goals, preferences, wellbeing and responses—not an assumption that one program fits everyone.
A 2025 JAMA Psychiatry meta-analysis included 38 randomized ADHD trials. Overall, probably blinded outcomes did not support neurofeedback as a stand-alone ADHD treatment. Some subgroup findings differed, but this is not evidence of a general cure or proof of benefit for autism.
What learning approach, accommodations and progress measures would fit this student, and can we visit or try a session first?
Ask about class size, reading instruction, executive-function support, accessible materials, teacher qualifications, sensory needs, anti-bullying practices and the student's own preferences. Clarify tuition, extra fees, admissions and any school-based support before committing.
How will this ABA plan respect the person's assent, communication, breaks and own goals, and how will we review benefits or distress?
Ask who supervises, how goals are agreed, what a typical session looks like, how refusal or distress is handled, how family feedback is used, and what alternatives are available. Avoid goals that simply prioritize compliance, forced eye contact or suppressing harmless self-regulation. Discuss support that improves meaningful communication, safety or everyday participation.
What evidence supports this exact neurofeedback method for this concern, who provides clinical supervision, and what are the costs and stopping criteria?
Ask what is actually being offered, how outcomes and possible unwanted effects are tracked, and whether there is an independent clinical assessment. Do not assume a provider's marketing, a brain-map report or a certification establishes effectiveness or replaces established care.
Which communication or everyday-life goal are we trying to improve, and can we trial the support or device with the person's involvement?
Ask about communication access including AAC, reading access, motor or sensory needs, who provides training, and whether a device can be borrowed before buying. Different goals may need different professionals or tools.
What would make this activity enjoyable and accessible, and can we check group size, breaks, support needs and a trial visit before signing up?
Begin with interests: art, music, coding, animals, nature, sport, books or shared-interest groups. Ask about actual age groups, transportation, supervision, sensory conditions and costs. Participation should not require masking or a diagnosis unless the specific program's eligibility requires one.
Save two or three possibilities, add private questions, and record a next step such as calling about age eligibility or arranging a visit. After an experience, note what the person liked, what was difficult and whether it is worth trying again.
