THERAPIES

CBT and behavioral activation for depression

Talking therapies that change unhelpful thinking and rebuild meaningful activity.

How it works

CBT works on the links between thoughts, feelings and behavior. Behavioral activation focuses specifically on gradually re-engaging with activities that bring a sense of pleasure, mastery or connection—depression tends to shrink a person's world, and this reverses that.

Questions for a clinician

Conversation prompts, not a treatment plan.

  • Would CBT, behavioral activation or another therapy fit best?
  • Should therapy be combined with medication in this case?
