Evenamide (investigational schizophrenia drug)
Investigational adjunct for treatment-resistant schizophrenia; FDA clinical hold at US study sites after a potential cardiac safety signal.
How it works
Evenamide is a sodium-channel modulator being investigated as an add-on to existing antipsychotics in treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
What the evidence says, use by use
Evidence is specific to the condition, population and—for devices—the exact product. One label never covers everything.
Schizophrenia & Psychosis: Adjunctive treatment of treatment-resistant schizophrenia
In clinical trialsAn October 8 company disclosure reported four deaths among evenamide-treated participants across its studies versus one with placebo. Investigators assessed three as unrelated and one possibly related; the FDA identified a potential cardiac arrhythmia safety signal, but causation has not been established. No benefit from an experimental intervention should be presented without this context.
Who usually provides it
Only approved clinical research teams; not routine clinical care.
Cautions & things to know
- Unresolved safety questions include possible arrhythmias, seizures and the clinical hold at US sites.
- Raw trial death counts do not establish drug causation or an individual's mortality risk.
- Clozapine and coordinated specialist services remain important established treatment pathways for treatment resistance, when suitable.
Questions for a clinician
Conversation prompts, not a treatment plan.
- Is the diagnosis and treatment-resistant status fully reviewed, including trials of standard options?
- What exactly is the current FDA hold and eligibility in our country?
- What alternative approved treatments and safety monitoring are appropriate?
