BEFORE YOU COMMIT
Questions worth asking when you call.
The staff and the peer group often matter more than the activity list. Ask to tour first—ideally on your own the first time—so you can see the noise level, the ages of the group and how staff talk to people.
For adults who are fairly independent, a mix often works better than one place five days a week: a couple of program days, a job-training or volunteering day, and one activity that is purely for fun. Let the person choose as much of it as possible.
What ages and support needs does the group you would place us in actually have right now?
What does a typical day or session look like, and how much of it is out in the community?
How do staff respond when someone gets upset, feels criticized, or needs a break?
What is the staff-to-participant ratio, and how long have the current staff been there?
How is it paid for—private pay, APD iBudget waiver, Vocational Rehabilitation, scholarships—and is there a waitlist?
Can we visit or tour first, and can we try one day before committing?
