THERAPIES
EMDR for trauma symptoms in autistic adults
EMDR can be considered for PTSD in an autistic adult after individualized assessment; it does not treat autism itself.
How it works
EMDR is a structured trauma-focused psychotherapy involving memory processing and bilateral stimulation. Delivery can be adapted to communication and sensory needs by a suitably trained clinician.
What the evidence says, use by use
Evidence is specific to the condition, population and—for devices—the exact product. One label never covers everything.
PTSD & Trauma: PTSD or clinically important trauma symptoms
EstablishedNICE recommends EMDR in specified adult PTSD circumstances. Whether it fits depends on the trauma presentation, timing and individual assessment.

Autism: Co-occurring post-traumatic stress; not core autism features
Emerging / limitedA small study found feasibility and symptom improvement. Autism-specific research is limited; these findings cannot determine individual suitability or explain a fear on their own.

Who usually provides it
A licensed clinician trained in EMDR, trauma assessment and autism adaptations, coordinating with the treating mental-health team.
Cautions & things to know
- Autism alone does not establish a need for EMDR. Clarify whether PTSD, OCD, social anxiety, sensory distress or another problem is present.
- A psychosis history calls for coordinated assessment and a plan for distress, readiness and pacing; it is not a reason to assume all trauma care is impossible.
- Do not attempt trauma processing or bilateral-stimulation experiments as a caregiver-led activity.
Questions for a clinician
Conversation prompts, not a treatment plan.
- Is there a trauma-related treatment target?
- How will communication, sensory preferences, consent and breaks be supported?
- How will you coordinate with the psychiatrist and monitor worsening symptoms?

Evidence varies substantially among interventions. Decisions about medical or mental-health treatment should be made with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
