A guide to levels and types of care
Outpatient psychiatry & therapy
Usually scheduled visits while living normally at home. A starting point for many non-emergency concerns and ongoing medication/therapy care.
Intensive outpatient (IOP)
Multi-day structured treatment while living at home. More support than weekly outpatient care, but not 24-hour care.
Partial hospitalization (PHP)
A high-intensity day program—often several hours, multiple days per week—while the person sleeps at home or approved housing. Sometimes used to prevent or step down from hospitalization.
Psychology & counseling
Assessment and therapy. Look for training in the specific therapy you need (ERP, CBIT, CBT-I, trauma-focused).
Residential treatment
Live-in treatment with 24-hour structure, but not necessarily the same medical/acute level as a psychiatric hospital. Program scope varies widely.
Crisis stabilization / inpatient psychiatry
For acute psychiatric crises or when 24-hour assessment, safety and stabilization are needed. In Florida this may include a Crisis Stabilization Unit or psychiatric hospital.
First-episode psychosis / Coordinated Specialty Care
A specialized team approach early in psychosis—typically medication management, individual therapy, family education, supported work/school and case coordination. Look for NAVIGATE/CSC rather than assuming a generic IOP provides this.
FACT / intensive community treatment
Multidisciplinary community-based support for some people with severe and persistent mental illness who need more than office visits to stay stable in the community.
Clubhouse / peer recovery community
Voluntary non-clinical communities built around belonging, routine, employment, education and friendship. These complement—not replace—clinical care.
Supportive housing
Housing plus varying levels of services for people who need help maintaining community living. Eligibility and funding vary; ask the local Managing Entity, FACT team, Clubhouse or case manager.
Early psychosis (Coordinated Specialty Care)
Team-based care soon after psychosis begins. Ask a psychiatrist or hospital system for the nearest program.
Adult day & community programs
Structured daytime programs; many accept the APD iBudget waiver.
Supported employment & job coaching
Help finding and keeping a job—often funded through Vocational Rehabilitation or APD.
Respite, companion & caregivers
For Florida APD/iBudget, respite is specifically an under-21 service. Adults may instead qualify for Personal Supports, Companion/Life Skills Development, Supported Living Coaching and other authorized supports.
Case management
Someone who coordinates services and benefits. Ask APD, your Medicaid plan or a CARD center.
